genovese nurse black and whiteWESTFIELD – Margaret Mary “Peg” (Lynch) Genovese, 87, of Westfield died November 16, 2013 at Loomis House in Holyoke. Born April 24, 1926 in Westfield, she was the daughter of the late Christina (Keefe) and John J. Lynch.
Peg graduated from Westfield High School in 1944. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her classmates, and she helped organize and publicize many class reunions and gatherings. Peg attended St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Hartford, CT as a Cadet Nurse during World War II and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1947. She was very proud of being a part of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. In August 2013, an article she wrote about her Cadet Nurse Training was published in the Fall issue of Vital Signs, the newsletter of the Alumni Association of the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps. She worked as a nurse for four decades at Noble Hospital in Westfield.
In 1948, Peg married her high school sweetheart, Samuel C. “Sam” Genovese, who died January 23, 2013. They were accomplished square dancers and elegant ballroom dancers. In addition to the home they built for their family on Oak Avenue in Westfield, Peg also loved spending time at the family’s cottage in South Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Peg was keenly interested in Westfield history and was a longtime member of the Western Hampden Historical Society. For several years, she was a docent at the Dewey House in Westfield. Peg also was an antique dealer. With a discerning eye, she scoured local tag sales for antiques and collectibles. She had sales booths at several locations over the years, including the old Post Office building in downtown Westfield, Hadley and Granby, CT. A collector herself, she amassed a major collection of Jacqueline Kennedy memorabilia.
A lifelong communicant of St. Mary’s Church, Peg was a member of the Confraternity of the Most Holy Rosary. She also was a member of the Sons of Erin Women’s Auxiliary. Her beloved family was Peg’s greatest joy.
She leaves four children; Margaret Carter of Herndon, VA and her husband, Thomas, Christine Hagan of Easthampton and her husband, Daniel, Samuel J. Genovese of Westfield and Daniel L. Genovese of Westfield, and his wife, Nancy. Four wonderful grandchildren, Daniel C. Hagan, Esq. of Southampton, Abby (Genovese) Wellspeak and Molly Genovese of Westfield and Amanda Carter of Redmond, WA. Her funeral and burial will be private.
