WESTFIELD – Mary E. “Betty” (Wingard) Plumley, 89, died Thursday, January 12, 2023, at home with her family. She was born in Presque Isle, Maine on May 3, 1933 to the late Sterling B. and Mary H. (Kelso) Wingard. Betty graduated from Bay Path Junior and Westfield State Colleges. She began her career in the broadcasting industry, but instead chose to make a home, raise a family and teach elementary school. She taught at Gateway Regional for many years, retiring in 1994. A wonderful educator her students still remember 30 years later. She was a member and deaconess of First Congregational Church in Westfield, also belonging to Woman’s Fellowship, and the Woman’s Club. She volunteered at Noble Hospital and in schools reading to children. Betty Plumley was a gracious lady, an amazing cook, an intrepid sailor and explorer with Barry. We will all miss her more than words can convey.
She leaves her husband of 65 years Barry H. Plumley, her children Matthew L. Plumley of Ft. Myers, FL, Steven J. Plumley of West Springfield and Mary J. Houle of Southampton as well as her 3 grandchildren, Mary A. Howes, Alle K. Murrey and Timothy D. Plumley, her nieces, nephews, and great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her sister JoAnn Langevin of Ft. Myers, FL.
The funeral and burial will be held at the Veterans Cemetery in Agawam later, at her family’s discretion. Donations may be made to First Congregational Church or the American Legion Post #124, both in Westfield, MA. Firtionadams.com
