WESTFIELD- A memorial service was held Sunday morning for the sudden passing of a student on the campus of Westfield State University over the weekend.
Dozens of students, teachers, and faculty were present at the Albert and Amelia Ferst Interfaith Center on the WSU campus to mourn the loss of the student. University President Ramon Torrecilha and other administration members were present for the sermon by Fr. Warren Savage.
The cause of death and the name of the student has not been officially released. The student was on campus when they passed away. The university administration sent out an email to all students Saturday evening announcing the news and offering support to any affected students.
“Dear Campus Community: I write to share the tragic news that one of our students passed away in a residence hall today. The University has been working with the deceased student’s family, friends, and others affected to ensure they have the services they need in the wake of this tragedy.
The University Police Department is working with state officials on the current investigation underway. Please know that there is no threat to the campus community,” said President Torrecilha in a statement.
Students are being encouraged to make use of the university’s counseling services in the wake of the tragedy.
