Minicucci leads WHS to first league win

WESTFIELD – Things are looking up for the Westfield High School field hockey team.
After opening the season with 1 win, 1 loss, and 1 tie, Westfield broke the ice with its second win, a 1-0 shutout of visiting Amherst yesterday.
“It’s our first league win – I’m pretty pumped,” Westfield coach Karen Gomez said of the South Division victory.
Lexi Minicucci scored the game-winner on a penalty corner with just over 24 minutes remaining in regulation.
Westfield’s midfield and defense responded well while playing down, thanks to two yellow cards in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Bombers’ goalie Jess Hale was fantastic in net, collecting 10 saves in the shutout.

JV FIELD HOCKEY
Westfield 6, Amherst 0
Westfield bounced back from a tough loss to Longmeadow with a rout of visiting Amherst. Grace Silva, Leighanne Sullivan, Julia Rowbotham, and Christina Onyski all received their first goals of the season. Gabbi Lunardini and Liz Marcyoniak also scored for the Bombers.
Carissa Vergnani, Jill Wroth, Sullivan, Lunardini, and Marcyoniak each had assists.
Westfield goalies Lexi Levere and Jourdan Frisbee earned a combined shutout.

GOLF
Westfield 254, Amherst 303
Westfield assured itself of a winning record going into next week with a win on the par-35 course at Tekoa Country Club.
Taylor Schmidt shot a 39 to lead all golfers. Tanner Dasso and Cam Dirico each finished with a 43.
Southwick 12, Monson 12
Jake Hough shot a team-low of 41 at Edgewood for Southwick.
Palmer 13, St. Mary’s 11
Noah Parker shot a team-low 41 at Quaboag’s par-35.
Hampshire 23.5, Westfield Voc-Tech 0.5
No. 1 golfer Jake Parson shot a team-low 53 for Voc-Tech. Tigers’ Jon Dion collected a half-point with a 54 in the fifth spot.

LATE RESULTS
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY
Westfield 23, Holyoke 32
Tim Dostie set a new course record at Holyoke (15:50), and the Bombers cruised past the Purple Knights in their season opener Tuesday.
Dostie shattered the old mark by 21 seconds.
Blake Croteau also entered the record books with a 16:01 finish, and now holds the course’s second-best time.
Ben Doiran (5th overall), Artie Cruz (6th overall ), Tim Stocker, Jake Santangello, and Cheyenne Grabiec finished 3-7 for Westfield.
