MONTGOMERY – A fire at 164 New State Road destroyed a 200-year-old farm house on Tuesday. The owners, who were not home when the fire broke out, are being helped by the American Red Cross and people from the community.
According to Huntington Fire Chief Gary Dahill, the call went out just before 1 p.m. Huntington has been on automatic mutual response with Montgomery since the Dec. 5 fire which claimed the life of Montgomery Fire Chief Stephen Frye. Dahill said when first on scene they were “short on people and short on water,” as there were no fire hydrants on the road and had to use tanker shuttle. Six departments responded, including Montgomery, Huntington, Russell, Chester, Southampton and Barnes ANG.
Dahill said they were able to save a barn and a couple of out buildings. Montgomery Fire Department remained on the scene Tuesday night on fire watch to make sure there were no hot spots, according to Dahill.
According to a spokesperson, the State Fire Marshall is assisting with the investigation. While it is still under investigation, the cause of the fire is not considered to be suspicious, and is believed to be accidental.
