SOUTHWICK – The new salt shed for the Town of Southwick is near its full completion. According to DPW Director Randy Brown, installing the barn door entrance is the only finishing touch that needs to happen.
NEL Corporation, who is the head contractor for the project, will be putting a couple lights inside the shed and one outside the front door.
Brown also noted that a loading ramp will be built in the next couple of weeks so trucks can drive to the side of the building near the ramp and the salt can be dumped into the loader.
The salt shed is located right behind the DPW garage on College Highway and is 80 by 100 ft.
For Brown and the rest of the DPW, seeing the salt shed so close to its completion is a welcome sight due to the amount of salt that can be stored.
In the old shed that was located behind the fire department, it only stored enough salt for two or three storms.
The new salt shed can have up to 3,000 tons of salt which is good enough for a whole year’s worth.
“That’s the plan, we’re going to be stocked for the year,” said Brown.
As there have been issues in the past with having enough salt when storms have come through, Brown is confident knowing that the new salt shed will create an improvement.
“It’s an easier process,” said Brown. “We’ll be able to respond quicker to a storm.”
Brown expects that the salt will be filled and ready within the next couple of weeks.
