WESTFIELD – Jonathan Carter of West Springfield has been named the new principal at Westfield High School.
Bringing a wealth of experience in technology, Carter has worked in Holyoke and Springfield Public Schools. He also brings his experience with the new state evaluation system that will be launched in Westfield this fall.
Most recently, he led Dean Technical High School working under the direction of an Education Management Organization (EMO), the Collaborative for Educational Services (CES), to lead the federally-mandated turnaround of the school using the restart model. During his time at Dean Tech, the school achieved improved academic performance, increased attendance, decreased suspensions and increased graduation rates. Previously, he was principal at Springfield’s High School of Science and Technology.
Carter was one of four finalists selected by a committee of staff, parents, students and school committee representatives. He brings a blend of experiences needed for Westfield at this time including a strong science and technology background, according to Westfield Schools Superintendent Suzanne Scallion. In addition, he has worked with the Student Data Management system that is being launched in Westfield and allows parent access to student grades. He is also familiar with the new Educator Evaluation system being implemented in the fall.
“We believe he brings a unique blend of skills to lead Westfield High School at this time and are excited to start working with him,” said Scallion. “He has a deep respect for the city of Westfield and has family connections going back many years.”
Carter loves sports, including soccer, which played at high levels of competition. He is married to a local physician and has two young sons. He will be in Westfield on July 1 and looks forward to spending time with retiring Principal Ray Broderick.
