Pink flamingo sightings rising in Westfield

WESTFIELD—If you wake up one morning and find several pink flamingo lawn ornaments adorning your yard, be aware—you’ve been flocked.

However, there is something you can do about it. You can flock someone back.

Westfield’s South Middle School’s 8th grade class are the culprits for the flockings, and are doing so to raise money for their annual Washington DC field trip. The group is charging money to have the flocks put in the yards of many unsuspecting victims and those victims can in turn request that another person’s home be flocked. All set up is done by children and their parents for the class, and the money goes toward their trip later this year.

“It’s a ton of fun, everyone is having fun with it,” Sandra Weeks, a mother of one of the students participating and organizer, said. “Even those getting flocked are having fun, it’s for a great cause.”

The fundraiser, which started April 1 and will run until May 24, has happened to 64 homes so far, with many more to come. The students charge $10 for each flocking, which consists of about 15 pink lawn ornaments. As for those who would prefer not to be flocked, they can purchase flocking insurance, which for $20 protects their home from the pink peril.

There are 11 duos of parents and students, as well as two backup teams, that go out at night sometime after 8 p.m., to take the pink flamingos from one home and plant them at another. The residents find the flamingos sometime in the morning, along with a large pink sign and information on how to make the incident happen to someone else.

“They go out, pick up flamingos from the night before and drop them off the night of,” Weeks said. “The kids and the parents are having such fun with it. It’s like innocent fun sneaking around.”

So far, the group has sold over 100 flocks and has raised a total of $1,600 for their DC trip in just 17 days. However, they still have availability to flock other homes. For those interested, you can find Weeks on Facebook and message her, or you can email the group at [email protected] for more information.
