WESTFIELD–A police chase in Westfield Wednesday night led to a car crashing into a utility pole in West Springfield and police searching for a suspect.
Westfield Police stopped a car shortly before 9 p.m. on Route 20 in Westfield, after an astute officer noticed a car drive by twice and pulled it over for an issue with its plate registration. After the vehicle was pulled over though, it took off and started driving toward West Springfield.
At the same time, police were investigating a burglary and breaking and entering at nearby Dry Bridge Road, where televisions, laptops and other items were reported missing.
The Westfield Police gave chase to the vehicle but were unsuccessful in stopping the vehicle. Eventually, the chase was called off after the vehicle crossed into West Springfield. However, the vehicle kept traveling at a high rate of speed and crashed into a utility pole on Dewey Street in West Springfield. The pole was sheared from its base.
There were no occupants in the vehicle when Westfield Police later arrived at the car crash site.
Westfield Police found that there was a television in the back seat of the vehicle that matched the description of one of the items missing from the Dry Bridge Road burglary. The victim of the break-in was brought to the site and confirmed.
Once police found this evidence, they searched the area for suspects, including utilizing the K9 unit, but the search turned up no one.
Police are still investigating.
Westfield Police Capt. Mike McCabe, in spite of not apprehending a suspect at this time, commended officer John Blascak, who initially stopped the vehicle.
“It was good police work because Blascak sees a car that doesn’t fit and checks it out and it turns out to be a good stop, a great stop,” McCabe said.
