Southwick cancelled grade 7 & 8 girls suburban basketball teams as 8 junior high players made the Southwick JV team this year. Southwick has supported two girls junior high teams for over 10 years. The problem is only 6 upper class girls in Southwick High tried out for the JV or Varsity teams. I have heard from many girls and parents that the girls didn’t like playing because of the coaching staff. Numbers don’t lie and when only 15 girls in grades 9-10-11 and 12 try out for your High School teams ,you have a serious problem. Instead of addressing the problem the AD allowed the varsity coach to take 8 impressionable junior high children to hide the shortage problem. Now you have 12 year old girls playing and hanging out with 17 and 18 year old young women . Funny the Principal at the High School doesn’t allow upper classmen to talk or socialize with junior high students but they can play sports together and have team sleepovers. I urge any parent who had a daughter quit playing basketball at Southwick High to call the Superintendents office and let them know why your daughter stopped playing the sport they loved.

Pertaining to the article about the WSU students feeling “unwelcome’ & “shunned”- and mentioning that there are not many shops for them downtown—- Well, somehow comparing Westfield to a “College Town” like Northampton with many thriving shops , restaurants and other activities– or like the Mount Holyoke College area with movie theaters and cute little boutiques ……. Well- the Smith College & Mount Holyoke students don’t impress me as “Raucous heavy beer-drinking Eastern Mass Drunks ” like we have here in the Mechanic Street area & on campus {when I read the WSU police log} that need a cell at the police station for a student !! The poor Westfield Police have many times had to shut down a loud beer party with 90+ people on a second floor on Mechanic St and surrounding streets that have students living in apartments. I don’t imagine that happens in Hamp with their students.
As far as wanting a bowling alley ….that’s a laugh !!!! A nice man in Westfield has invested thousand of dollars to re-do the old Romani’s Lanes on Church Street only to be told that the town council wants to raze the building for a parking garage……Who is gonna park in this garage ??? I think more townsfolk and WSU students would use the bowling alley this man wants to resurrect rather than the parking garage !!
Oh well- typical Westfield– another parking lot– Mr. Browns’ lecture about Downtown Westfield in the 50’s and 60’s dealt with this many times about making more parking lots – so I am not the only one who is saying this !!
I doubt this comment of mine will be printed in the Pulse Line – but I just had to get it off my chest !! Thanks– P.S. I love the Pulse Line !
