With all due respect to city engineer Cressotti, his answer about sewers being available to residents in some neighborhoods off Shaker Rd. is hogwash. Please look at a map. The Springfield water lines should not affect connecting Birch Bluffs, Colony Park or Old Farm to the sewer lines which pass very close to these neighborhoods. The “pipeline” is south of the Birch Bluffs and Colony homes and these neighborhoods could easily be connected on the north side of the pipeline never even affecting it and the Old Farm homes could be tied in to the sewers under the new rail trail, once again, not affecting the pipeline. I’d like a better answer than the one he gave. We spoke to Mr. Cressotti again and here are his comments: For the specific neighborhoods you indicate you are correct. In the original comment a specific neighborhood was not indicated so some sewer connections in the Shaker and Tannery Rd areas could impact the Springfield aqueduct. With the limited funds available to the city each year for sewer work we must ensure that all neighborhoods are given equitable treatment, meaning, some connections are made in various points around the city when possible. Additionally, if a new housing development is being built near a sewer line, such as the Winding Ridge area a few years ago, the responsibility and expense is on the developer to tie his project into the city sewers. Service to the Tannery Rd end of Shaker Rd is precluded from connection to the west by the Aqueduct, to the east the neighborhoods mentioned are those that would need to be serviced first.  The funding amount and distribution requires the time indicated. This is in response to 5’3″ lady on January 31. BINGO, you hit it right on the head. The amount of crime that goes on cannot be stopped by the number of police officers on the street. My gun is for the protection of my family and for anyone else in the vicinity when I am in public, because there are no officers at McDonalds, The Mall, the movie theatre, the children’s museum or wherever else crazies may decide to take a life. This country likes statistics so much, let them start tracking all the violence with guns as to did the person have a permit such as I have to get, did they purchase their weapon from a licensed gun dealer or off the street corner like most of them do. Or were their guns supplied to them by the drugs lords who purchased these high power weapons from the US Government. The media and the politicians are pushing scare tactics to misinformed people. You are also right about another thing, should they break into your home, will they have the patience to wait for you to unlock your weapon, unlock your ammo and clip from another location before they start to rape and brutalize you. I THINK NOT. You will be but another victim of a violent crime who could have protected yourself if not for all the locks. We must find a solution to all these violent crimes, but it is through criminal control and not gun control. You mentioned the Petit’s, why were those two given life in prison to live better than our military personal. They should have been executed. I am going to go one step further and urge you to do the same. I am sending a letter to our state leaders and putting them on notice, Should such a violent crime happen to my family and I survive like Dr Petit I am going to sue the state for wrongful death because they did not protect my family and did not allow me the means to do so. Criminals don’t play by the rules, they make their own. Before you decide, take the time to educate yourself and look at statistics. And what if by chance there ever was a scenario like the movie Red Dawn, what would we be able to do? Think

Yeah, this is in regards to the gun controversy.  I saw something in the PulseLine, today, February 1 edition, and somebody’s writing about “oh yes, you forgot about the true meaning of the Second Amendment, which is we have the right to bear arms.”  No one is disputing that at all. No one is disputing you shouldn’t have a weapon to protect yourself.  What we are disputing is: how many do you need? And what kind do you need? And do you need clips of bullets more than 10? Do you need automatic weapons? Assault weapons? Do you need grenade launchers, which, yes, they did find at a gun show? And, I don’t know, you just take this Antonin Scalia conservative judge, he said that the Constitution Second Amendment does not really cover the weapons you’re talking about; assault rifles or grenade launchers or automatic machine guns or whatever you guys want or whatever you have.  No one is going to take what you got away, on top of it.  No one is going to take your guns away.  We just want to stop or ban new assault weapons. The other thing is they said “look at the family in Cheshire that lost their lives.”  If they had a gun they probably could have prevented what happened? I’m sure this family sat there with guns in their laps, waiting for someone to come and attack them.  Because they burst in, they had not a shot, even if they had guns, how were they going to get them? Also, if you remember there was a very, very true story that happened out in the heartlands called “In Cold Blood” where two guys went in there, surprised the family, tied them all up and shot them with their own guns. Now, what are you talking about? Please tell me.  You guys are just so afraid that someone is going to take your little toys away from you.  They’re lethal and certain people shouldn’t have them.  You don’t even want background checks.  You people are kinda sick.

I’m amazed at Southwick’s police department and I’ve also seen the fire department, even the chief, and the DPW driving around on rainy days, dreary days, hard to see days, with no headlights on.  All of them are supposed to be setting an example.  I’ve even seen Westfield’s finest do the same.  If it’s not a law it should be the law and they should lead the way.  Have a good day. According to http://www.malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXIV/Chapter90/Section7: Every automobile operated during the period from one half an hour after sunset to one half an hour before sunrise, and during any other period when visibility is reduced by atmospheric conditions so as to render dangerous further operation without lights being displayed, shall display at least two lighted white headlamps with at least one mounted at each side of the front of the vehicle or if parked within the limits of a way at least one white or amber light on the side of the automobile nearer the center of the way, and every motorcycle so operated at least one white headlamp and every such motorcycle with a sidecar attached, in addition, one such light on the front of the sidecar, and every motor truck, trailer and commercial motor vehicle used solely as such, having a carrying capacity of three tons or over, in addition, an amber light attached to the extreme left of the front of such vehicle, so attached and adjusted as to indicate the extreme left lateral extension of the vehicle or load, which shall in all cases aforesaid be visible not less than two hundred feet in the direction toward which the vehicle is proceeding or facing; provided, that an automobile need display no light when parked within the limits of a way in a space in which unlighted parking is permitted by the rules or regulations of the board or officer having control of such way. For more tips on using your headlights, check out Chapter 3: Safety First of the Massachusetts Driver’s Manual.

I read in the PulseLine that according to a cardiologist the Pelican Plunge is dangerous. I’m never going to do it. However, the Penguin Plunge was awesome and I’m looking forward to taking the plunge again next year

Good afternoon Westfield,  I was just wondering: when Walmart is a new Super Walmart will they be given/allowed to buy a liquor license? Will we be now able to buy  wine and beer that is cheaper by bulk and easier than going to a department store, a food store and a package store all in one place? Just wondering.  Walmart could pursue a package goods store liquor license if they qualify under the Alcohol Beverages Control Commission regulations, which presently state… “any person or combination of persons may hold, directly or indirectly five (5) off-premises alcohol licenses…” (package store licenses) in the Commonwealth. However, Westfield has no all (full) alcohol package goods store licenses available within their quota.  With that said, Walmart could approach an existing Westfield package goods store and negotiate a purchase of their license.  All alcohol license requests must receive local and state approval before a license can be granted.   It could be cheaper by bulk, but that would be up to the licensee’s business plan.

I was in a store, looking to replace my phone, which had a problem.  A stranger stopped, we chatted, and I told him the problem. He suggested another place, which wasn’t as costly.  He also asked if I restarted it. I asked how. Simply unplug it and plug it back in.  Or call the company.  Maybe they can suggest what to try.  Well, kind sir, you were right.  Unplug it and plug it back in.  Many thanks.  My phone is working fine.  Again, thanks so much.
