WESTFIELD – Ralph R. Sheldon, 94, passed away peacefully on August 29th, 2023. He was born in Springfield to Lawrence and Martha (Anderson) Sheldon. He graduated from Springfield Trade School and went on to serve in the US Army during the Korean War, where he earned The Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and numerous other medals indicating service in battle conditions.
After his Korean War service, he moved to Russell, became a restaurant owner and married Angela (DeMartino) Skop. Together they ran the “The Glen Lounge” until their retirement in 1974. They were then able to travel and see much of the world. By the late 1980’s, they became “snowbirds” and by the early 90’s, they had decided to move to Florida full time. They volunteered much of their time at the Wood Trail Condo’s in New Port Richey, FL and made a new home for themselves, where they lived happily until Angela’s passing in 2017.
Ralph was a past commander of the VFW Post #6645 and was also a member of the Elks. He loved to walk, play cribbage and he lived and died with the New York Yankees!
Ralph was predeceased by his wife Angela, his daughter Gail Dubay in 2020 and brother David in 2012.
He is survived by his sons Robin and Steven, his granddaughters Shana Dubay and fiancée Melissa Small, Danielle Sheldon and fiancé Neil McEwan, great-grandchildren Evelyn and Ethan, and nephews Peter and John Sheldon. He also leaves behind many friends from Florida and Massachusetts including Cathy Clark, Helen Lent and everyone he traded jokes with at the Arbors.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, September 5th, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Firtion Adams Funeral Home at 76 Broad Street, Westfield. A memorial service will be held the following morning, Wednesday, September 6th at 9:00 a.m., at the MA Veterans Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam.
