HAMDEN, CT – Philadelphia’s very own Low Cut Connie flat out destroyed The Space Ballroom in Hamden Connecticut Saturday night. The name refers to a waitress who wore low cut tops at a restaurant where Weiner grew up.
Formed in 2010 when Weiner decided to forgo a solo career and start a side project that would eventually become Low Cut Connie. Touring in support of a two part album release, Dirty Pictures (Part 1) from 2017 and Dirty Pictures (Part 2) from this year. Both releases have received acclaim from numerous outlets that have reviewed them.
This is truly a live band! Showcased front and center by singer Weiner who also plays piano throughout the show. The showmanship is reminiscent of a mix of Freddie Mercury from Queen and Elton John. Weiner is a first class front man and not many can pull off doing this while singing and playing the piano.
This band has been fully endorsed by Elton John and even gave them a shout out when John’s tour made a stop in Philadelphia. One other note of fame, Former President Barack Obama created a Spotify summer playlist that included Low Cut Connie’s Boozophilia.
Tonight’s show focused on a number of cuts from the Dirty Pictures set. The band cranked through almost twenty songs on the night. Some of the highlights were the opener All These Kids Are Way Too High, Dirty Water, Angela, Every Time You Turn Around and an Alex Chilton cover of Hey! Little Child.
The band returned to the stage for a two song encore of cover tunes. A tribute to a couple of music stars that have passed away recently, Tom Petty and Prince. Free Girl Now from Petty and Controversy from Prince ended the night on a really high note as Weiner finished up the singer part of the show and walked through the crowd high fiving the fans and out the front door in to the night.
Australian born Ruby Boots opened the show and made the most of her limited time. Boots definitely made some new fans this night after performing a high energy set. Touring in support of her 2018 release Don’t Talk About It, Boots is just starting to make a name for herself in the United States. Relocating to Nashville a few years ago has given her career a boost while being in the middle of Music City U.S.A.
It would have been nice to see a full set from her, but as the opening act, the set times are usually pretty limited. She did mention coming back to this area in the new year. I would say make it a point to go see her and support live music.
The Space Ballroom in Hamden is another excellent place to see live music in the area. Drawing a lot of indie bands, the Ballroom is an open floor general admission venue with plenty of sight lines from anywhere in it. And might I add, a great selection of craft beers. There is limited space and many of the shows sell out.
