SOUTHWICK – With the arrival of spring and consistent warm weather, it can be an enjoyable time for people to spend time outdoors. But, the weather can also bring out wild animals like bears.
Similar to almost every year, the Southwick Police Department has been receiving calls from residents about bears being in their yards and neighborhoods. On May 19, the department posted on social media that they’ve received reports of bears and reminded the community to follow their tips regarding bears.
“We don’t want to see anyone get hurt so that’s why we keep putting out those notifications,” said Southwick Police Chief David Ricardi.
The department is reminding people to not entice bears when approaching their neighborhood or yard. This includes feeding them or provoking them. Ricardi reminds residents to keep refuse securely in proper trash receptacles and to be aware when food is grilled.
“They’re going to be attracted to that too,” said Ricardi.
In the notice from the department, the most recent report has been a bear seen at numerous areas on South Longyard Road on May 18.
If anyone spots a bear near their residence or in town, contact the Southwick Police Department at 413-569-5348.
