Thirty years ago, I took the leap into self-employment. It’s a move I’ve never regretted, despite the ups and downs of my business and the fact that I’d never found a “how to” guide. It’s tough enough to survive on your own, let alone thrive in an unforgiving business world, where you have to attract business to your business, do the work, balance the books, chase down the payments, and do it over and over again.
Public relations expert and award-winning Succeeding in Small Business blog publisher Jeanne Yocum took the plunge from being a part of a larger organization and going solo, and she’s recapped her experiences, expertise, and lessons learned along the way into a new guide, The Self-Employment Survival Guide: Proven Strategies to Succeed as Your Own Boss, which was released this month on the Rowman and Littlefield imprint.
We got to know each other a decade ago, when she was working and living in Granby, MA. She had asked me to become a blog contributor, and I write monthly columns about marketing and public relations, and profiles of successful small business owners. Over coffee one day, we talked shop about being self-employed and the kind of advice we’d offer others taking the leap into joining the forces of the self-employed. Later on, as she was writing the book, she asked me to be one of the “other voices” in the book, offering my own point of view on various topics. I’m thrilled to be part of this venture, and was more thrilled to see how Jeanne’s book and my thoughts meshed.
Jeanne’s book is a common-sense, easy to understand guide to first, deciding if one should go off on their own, then on to how to manage the business basics from workspace to health insurance, cash flow, burnout, and all of the things one should consider, before making the leap. Much of the book balances anecdotal advice from Jeanne with hard facts, suggested coping strategies, and other voices, myself among them, which add to the dialogue. We other voices did not see the text of the book, until our copies arrived by mail last month.
Having a guide book like The Self-Employment Survival Guide: Proven Strategies to Succeed as Your Own Boss makes the journey easier, because once you realize “you’re not the only one”, there are options, best practices, coping strategies and opportunities. I plan to use the book as a resource for my clients and for my public relations workshops.
