SOUTHWICK – More than a year after the Planning Board approved a special permit for Rite Aid to build a facility at 592 College Highway, construction activity has begun.
This week, water, gas and electric lines were cut in preparation for demolition of the existing building on the site next week.
Town Planner Alan Slessler said the hold-up was an appeal made by an abutter.
“Once approved, there is a 21-day appeal opportunity and there was an appeal from a resident,” said Slessler. “It went through the process and was approved. It was unfortunate, but it happens a lot.”
A site construction meeting with the building, planning, health and fire departments is set for June 1 to make sure the site is ready for demolition.
The property is adjacent to the Mobil station in the center of town and will bring in more tax revenue while providing convenience to customers.
“It will have a nice drive-thru and I think it will be a plus for that corner,” said Assessor Sue Gore.
Gore said the lot is 1.5 acres and the proposed facility will be 11,944 square-feet, including 11,186 square-feet on the main level plus a 758 square-foot mezzanine.
Once complete, the new Rite-Aid will have 51 parking spaces, including three handicap spots, and a driveway connecting to the Mobil station.
“It will be quite a bit larger than the current space,” said Slessler, “and much more valuable.”
Design consultants for Rite-Aid first presented plans to the Planning Board in March, 2013.
