RUSSELL – The Russell Police Department hosted a Family Fun Day on Sunday at Strathmore Park.
Admission was free to the fair, which had food from Café Christo, live entertainment by Kittie and the Bear and the Bad News Jazz & Blues Orchestra, a bounce house, water slide and magician for children, classic cars, and other family friendly activities.
Police Chief Kevin Hennessey and second in command Officer Jen Dubiel, who started the event several years ago, expanded the hours this year, and the parking lot was filled most of the day, with proceeds from a raffle going to the newly formed Russell Police Association.
Neighboring police departments also participated. The Easthampton Police Department K9 team of Officer Andrew Beaulieu and his K-9 partner Gino did a demonstration of their teamwork for the crowd. Officer Jeff Joniec of the Holyoke Police Department brought his customized ’96 Corvette, the Thin Blue Line (@thin_blue_line), which he said was meant to honor fallen police officers. The car is now the pace car in the Ride to Remember to Boston.
Sgt. Robert Spiegler drove the Tolland Police Department’s 1987 Humvee. Chief Ed Deming said the department has had it for six years and uses it to respond to calls way out in the woods and on trails. “When it’s real snowy, I’d rather take this out than a cruiser,” Deming said.
Chief Hennessey thanked the town of Russell for their support. “This is what makes all the hard work pay off. A community coming together and having a great time,” Hennessey said.
