Ruthers prep for tourney

WESTFIELD – The Westfield Babe Ruth Baseball 13-Year-Olds easily could have opted to be named co-champs with Pittsfield in the state tournament last week, bypassing the decision to play the if-game for an undisputed title. Westfield lost 6-3.
The Westfield 13s will have another chance to claim a title on a bigger stage when they open play Friday night at 7 in the New England Regionals at Bullens Field. As the host team, Westfield was secured a spot in the regionals regardless of their finish in the states. If Pittsfield lost, they would still have been in the tourney as the default “hosts.”
Before Friday’s postseason action begins, a special Vintage Base Ball game featuring the Westfield Wheelmen and Whately Pioneers will take play Thursday night at Bullens Field at 7. Former New York Yankees pitcher Jim Bouton is a member of the Pioneers.
SENIORS’ MOMENT: The Westfield Little League Softball Senior All-Stars will open the eastern regionals against Maine at Ty Cobb Field in Worcester on Saturday at 2 p.m. For a full schedule of events, log on to thewestfieldnews.com.
