WESTFIELD — Mayor Daniel Knapik and the City of Westfield held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Sadie Knox on Monday afternoon, celebrating the completion of a $300,000 renovation of the neighborhood playground. The highlight of the renovation includes the installation of a spray park and new playground equipment to serve children from-2 to 12 years old.
The project was funded by a $200,000 grant from the state’s Executive Office of Energy & Environmental Affairs’ “Our Common Backyards” program and a $100,000 match from the City of Westfield Community Preservatjon program.
“As we work through what seems to be the hottest week of the summer, I am very pleased to celebrate this community project,” Knapik said. “Spray parks across the City have provided respite from the heat to families for the past decade since the closure of the state pool, and our priority was to bring this resource to the families who live on the north side of town,” he continued. Built by Mountain View Landscapes of Chicopee and designed by R. Levesque Associates of Westfield, the project aimed to add additional programmatic capacity to Sadie Knox without compromising its function as the hub of the Little League softball program.
“On behalf of the State Senate I would like to congratulate Westfield on this newly upgraded park and thank the taxpayers and he Commonwealth for their investment in “Our Common Backyard,” said Senator Don Humason. “Nice parks mean a better quality of life and a more livable community for the residents of our city. I invite everyone to enjoy the new Sadie Knox Spray Park.” “The ‘Our Common Backyards’ program has allowed most cities across Massachusetts to make a meaningful investment in the neighborhoods that need it most,” Representative John Velis said. “These high-impact, lower-cost projects make Westfield neighborhoods more attractive places to live,” he continued.
