St. Mary’s High School lost a tough fight against Belchertown 19-9 in a girls’ lacrosse game yesterday at Stanley Park, but the afternoon held even bigger significance for a handful of Saints.
St. Mary seniors Christina Watson, Emily Brown, Marguerite Butler, Monica Hannoush, and Sinead Smith – all four-year starters – played their final home game of their high school careers in the team’s first varsity season.
“They’ve been instrumental in building the program to what it is today,” St. Mary coach Dave Watson said. “It’s certainly been a challenge, but these seniors have definitely shown a lot of leadership for the younger players.”
These five seniors have played some competitive contests, and suffered demoralizing losses, but have continued to keep the other players upbeat throughout a tough schedule. On Friday, they ran into another buzzsaw.
Taylor Marshall and Lauren Chapdelaine finished with two goals apiece for St. Mary’s. Saints’ Sinead Smith, Watson, Bella Butler, Aisling Smith, and Becca Streeter each had one goal.
