Samantha Redmond Syron, 24, a Cystic Fibrosis warrior died peacefully on July 14, 2019 at Boston Children’s Hospital. Beloved Sam is free of tubes, IV’s and sickness. With her loving mother and family by her side, Sam found peace.
Sam was born in Springfield MA on October 7, 1994. She was a student at Holy Cross School in Springfield, a 2013 early honors graduate of Minnechaug Regional High School and a 2017 Magna Cum Laude graduate of UMass Amherst. Sam was able to pack in a tremendous amount of living in her short 24 years all the while battling this horrendous disease. After college she became certified and worked as a Phlebotomist, she was a certified personal trainer, nutritionist and started her own business. Ultimately, she used all of this knowledge and indomitable spirit to inspire her social media followers made up of CF’ers and non-CFers alike. She wanted to help others and to get the CFers to keep moving and participate as much as they could in their own journey. Once Sam discovered the benefits of workouts, she became the ultimate gym rat, many times dragging her oxygen tanks (who she affectionately named Phil) with her and including Phil in her workout.
Sam lived, she did not just exist. She adopted her mother’s adventurist spirit and was able to travel and experience many places, including living in San Diego, snowboarding in Colorado and Washington State, riding horses at a Dude Ranch in Wyoming, and soaking up the sun and participating in many water sports in the Caribbean and Bermuda.
From an early age, Sam loved all kinds of sports and excelled in swimming, softball, basketball, snowboarding and golf. Recently Sam met the love of her life, his name is Bo. He is an 18 month old fur baby mutt who she rescued and became her best friend, emotional support and off-roading buddy.
Due to her mother’s relentless pursuit in finding humor in anything in order to help Sam heal, Samantha could make light of even the most serious situations. Her motto as stated in her Instagram profile was “whatever doesn’t kill me better run like hell”.
Sam had many nicknames – Sam, Lamb chop, Lambo, Snarky Bunny, Samster the Hamster, Samdarella. Sam will be incredibly missed by friends, family and those she has inspired throughout her own journey.
She leaves behind to share her story, her hero, her mother Laura Syron Paley and her step-father, Doug Paley of Somers, CT. She will be missed by her grandmother, Judith Syron; Uncle Ted Syron and Aunt Andrea Syron as well as her sister/cousins MacKenzie and Lilly Syron. She also leaves her Aunt and Uncle Mary Jo and Christopher O’Brien and Cousins Liam and Aiden O’Brien. Her new family, the Paley’s; Grandmother Dorie Paley, Brother Jason Paley; Aunt Beth Paley; Uncle Bruce Paley; and Uncle Jon Paley and Erika. Sam also leaves a half-sister, Julie (Surridge) Turner. Sam’s Aunt Extraordinaire and Godmother Diane Hall who was with her from the day she was born and was with her still as she found peace will miss her greatly. Sam was very fortunate to have an army of Auntie Hen’s who have provided love and support to both Sam and her Mom since the day she was “hatched”. Samantha was pre-deceased by her father, Charles Surridge and her beloved PopPop, Edward Syron.
A celebration of Sam’s life will take place on Saturday, July 27th at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA. Laura and her family will receive friends and family from 11am – 2pm and will be immediately followed by the Celebration of Life. During the celebration of life, Laura and her family encourage you to share a story or memory of Sam.
Laura and her family will be forever grateful to the incredible, collaborative team from Boston Children’s Hospital ICU that cared for Sam with such respect and compassion.
