On October 28th, dozens of student athletes and teachers from Southwick-Tolland Regional High School will be hitting the pavement for the local Rays of Hope walk to fund breast cancer research. Members of the girls’ and boys’ teams from field hockey, volleyball, golf, soccer and cross country are all participating and playing a crucial role in fundraising for the event.
Kristin Tetrault, an English teacher at the high school, has been a driving force behind the large amount of participants.
Tetrault said: “We have a very caring and involved student body here at STRHS. They took the idea to participate in this event and really rolled with it.”
Sports coaches were contacted in regards to the fundraiser and they presented it to their athletes who eagerly hopped on board. The Rays of Hope walk is a great way to indirectly help out some of the faculty members from STRHS who are currently battling breast cancer.
Paige Cool, one of the STRHS participants said: “ I know a lot of people who have battled with breast cancer, to me this walk is not only good exercise but it makes me feel like I am doing something to better the world, who knows maybe help from our donations will come a cure.”
The Southwick runners/walkers will all be getting together after school and making tye dye shirts to sport on race day.
Anyone interested in donating to the cause may do so online at https://foundation.baystatehealth.org/netcommunity/sslpage.aspx?pid=449&tab=1
Additionally, checks made out to Baystate Health can be mailed to Southwick-Tolland Regional High School in care of Kristin Tetrault, 93 Feeding Hills Road, Southwick, MA 01077.
