Boy Scout Troop 109 donates to food pantry

WESTFIELD – The shelves at the Westfield Food Pantry are fuller, thanks to donations from Boy Scout Troop 109.
The group delivered several boxes and bags of non-perishable food Sunday to help replenish the pantry before the holidays.
Scout Daniel Jemiolo understood the severity of the need and wanted to help.
“Some people don’t have the money to buy food,” he said. “It’s important to donate so people stay alive.”
Rebecca Hart, director of the pantry, thanked the scouts and said the number one thing they always need is cereal.
“Cereal is needed, and pasta and pasta sauce,” said Hart.
Hart said the pantry is able to take perishable items, too.
“We have a big refrigerator and cooler and can take fresh and frozen food,” she said. “And for people who have gardens in the summer, we can take fresh, local produce as well.”
Den Mother Brandy Peterson organized the collection and the next day saw a notice that the pantry was in crisis.
Scout leaders Pat Crowley and Erik and Jo-Ann Davidson said the collection is all part of scout service.
“One of the purposes of scouting is to provide service to the community,” he said. “It is also about respect and personal growth.”
The Davidsons added that this pack is from St. Mary’s and includes a faith-based component.
The scouts have been selling popcorn for the pack and the military and will make a presentation at Barnes Fighter Wing after Thanksgiving. Popcorn is still available to purchase online at www.prpopcornstore.com.
The pack meets monthly and welcomes new members. For information, contact [email protected].
