WESTFIELD–The city’s Joseph Avenue sewer improvement plan is one step closer to beginning.
The project was advertised for bid this past week by the city’s engineering department. The bids are expected to be opened on March 7 during that evening’s Water Commission meeting. The project will begin later in the year but will extend through the winter, and is expected to cost around $2.2 million.
Mark Cressotti, city engineer for Westfield, said that the project will happen in the Joseph Avenue neighborhood. According to Cressotti, it will be from Joseph Avenue south of Paper Mill Road, also covering portions of Grandview Drive, Rachael Terrance and Christopher Drive, as well as a portion of Paper Mill Road from Mockingbird Lane to Paper Mill School.
Cressotti said that this project is going to occur “fairly deep” below the road surface, which extends the completion of the process. This is because following digging they must allow for settlement and compacting of the earth afterward, which he said will happen over the winter season. However, while this is happening the roads will be temporarily paved over.
A separate cost following the project will be incurred for paving the roads permanently, though.
City council has previously OKed the $2.2 million in the form of a bond, Cressotti said.
