WESTFIELD- Shaker Farms Country Club will be hosting the 1st Western Massachusetts Amputee Golf Open on August 19.
Registration begins at Noon, followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. It costs $90 to participate, which covers the greens fees, golf cart, lunch, and a buffet dinner. However, for amputees, it costs just $45 to take part in the tournament.
Nancy Kotowitz, of Shaker Farms Country Club, was approached months ago by several members of her family. Having a cousin that has two children that are handicapped, Kotowitz’s family insisted that she start an event for amputees.
“We really want to make a big splash,” said Kotowitz.
A Westfield resident and regular golfer at Shaker Farms, Sean Bienvenue is looking forward to taking part in the tournament with his friends and other participants.
“I figured it would be a good opportunity to go out and have some fun with them,” said Bienvenue.
In November of 2015, Bienvenue got his sweatshirt caught in a meat grinding machine which ensnared his right arm had to be rushed to the hospital. It was determined that his right hand would have to be amputated.
At the beginning of dealing with life as an amputee, it was tough for Bienvenue since he’s right-hand dominant. Since then, Bienvenue has only embraced the struggle.
“It was a fun challenge, I like the challenge of trying to relearn everything,” said Bienvenue.
Attempting golf for the first time this summer, Bienvenue believes it’s important for amputees to stay active and do what makes you happy.
“You can’t let it define who you are,” said Bienvenue. “You can go out and do something about it.”
All of the proceeds from the amputee open will be given to the Eastern Amputee Golf Association and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
Kotowitz is also seeking sponsors for the event. The types of sponsors include event, title, gold, silver, bronze, and hole sponsor. The deadline to register for the event is Sunday August 12 and interested parties can register by visiting the Shaker Farms website.
