SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Fire Department received a report of a gas leak on College Hwy at 7:09 p.m. Tuesday night.
Upon arrival, fire personnel discovered that a snow plow had hit the service line for gas on the New England Bike building at 512 College Hwy. The crash caused the gas pipe to shear off from the meter and begin to leak.
“It ended up releasing a high-pressure line of natural gas,” said Southwick Fire Chief Russ Anderson. “We were able to go in and shut the valve off and stop the leak.”
Luckily, with the assistance from Columbia Gas to repair the leak, first responders were able to stop the leak within 20 minutes.
“It was a large volume of natural gas coming from the supply line,” Anderson added.
According to Anderson, there’s no cause at this time as to why the snow plow crashed into the New England Bike building to cause the leak.
