Solid waste handler’s regulations nearing completion

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Board of Health has been working since February towards establishing a solid waste handler’s program  which addresses the operations of solid waste handling companies conducting business within the town of Southwick.

Board of Health Director Tom FitzGerald drafted regulations and worked with DPW Director Randy Brown for clarification on some questions before finalizing the proposal.

It is expected that the new solid waste handler’s regulations will be signed at the next Board of Health meeting on June 1.

Not every community throughout the commonwealth has solid waste handling regulations, but FitzGerald sees a benefit for it in Southwick.

“It allows the town to get some resources from the DEP (Mass Department of Environmental Protection),” said FitzGerald.

The Solid Waste Handler’s program coincides with the DPW’s Sustainable Materials Recovery Program (SMRT) that Brown had applied for in order to get grants. Municipalities who have programs and policies that improve waste reduction, reuse, and recycling, qualify for this program.
