WESTFIELD – Westfield’s South 10-11 year old All Stars had Northampton’s Little Blue Devils feeling even bluer than usual on their return trip home yesterday.
While their Red uniformed counterparts at Paper Mill Field were doing a job on visiting Agawam, South gave their opposition an early night as well, hauling off on visiting Northampton 12-1 at Cross Street Park.
Facing Northampton starter O’Ryan McClain, South made quick work of the young hurler, notching five quick runs in the opening frame of the first inning, with RBI’s coming from Colin Scanlon and Tony Torres, and with several runs coming home thanks to wild McClain pitches.
Offensively, Northampton never had a chance against South starter Darrin Roberts, who struck out the first Hamp side he faced, enabling South to continue their rampage.
After ravaging McClain in the first, Northampton sent in second baseman Noah Brink, who fared “Noah” better, giving up a single to South’s David Tirrell that would send South speedster Ryan Phillips home to make it 6-0 for the home team.
While Hamp was able to eke a single run out against Roberts in the bottom of the second, South notched six more runs over the next two innings, leaving officials no choice but to call the game, just as Mother Nature was saying she, too, had had enough, depositing large raindrops over the Cross Street crowd.
Westfield registered twelve runs on nine hits for the evening, as opposed to one run and two hits for the Little Blue Devils.
South is off until tomorrow when they travel to Agawam for a 6 p.m. first pitch. The game could have major implications for this weekend’s playoff pools, setting up a potential all-Westfield grudge match for all the marbles – a District championship.
