SOUTHWICK – The 250th anniversary committee will be holding their second meeting on Monday July 16, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Southwick Town Hall.
In April, the Select Board announced that they were looking to form a committee to work on the 250th anniversary project.
The first meeting took place in June allowing anyone interested in serving on the committee, or at least volunteering, to learn more and share ideas. About 20 people attended the first meeting and voiced ideas for what the 250th celebration should consist of. The celebration will include events throughout the entire year, starting in December of 2019 and lasting until November of 2020.
For the second meeting, the committee is hoping that more people will show up and want to be a part of the committee. Besides the fact that the committee would love to have representation from every non-profit organization in town, they also need the younger generation. Russ Fox, the Select Board designee who’s organizing the committee, added that parents who have young children in the Southwick school system would be a great benefit to the committee since a lot of the events will be kid-friendly.
“We’d love to have volunteers who have children in school,” said Fox.
The Southwick Civic Fund, a non-profit organization, will be assisting the committee by organizing any money that is raised for the 250th celebration.
According to Fox, the town has $5,000 left over from Southwick’s 225th anniversary along with $5,000 each that will be appropriated for both FY18 and FY19 bringing the total amount of money the town has for the celebration is $15,000. Senator Don Humason is working on an earmark to help reserve additional money.
Southwick was incorporated as a separate community on November 7, 1770 and the town will be celebrating their 250th anniversary in 2020.
