SOUTHWICK – According to sources close to Southwick-Tolland Regional High School, longtime head varsity softball and girls’ soccer coach Todd Downie has been relieved of his duties after he came under fire recently for allegations of assault.

No further details regarding the incident have been released. Southwick High athletic director Frank Montagna would not comment on the situation, and Downie has not returned calls to The Westfield News.

Support for Downie has been growing as witnessed by the more than 200 petitioners – players both current and past and other student-athletes from the school – who are calling for the coach’s reinstatement.

Several of those petitioners are rumored to be attending Tuesday night’s school committee meeting to protest the move and show support for their coach.
