SOUTHWICK – The 14th annual field trip around Southwick by the third graders of Woodland School, guided by members of the Southwick Historical Society, was completed recently. Since the Grand Opening of the Southwick History Museum on October 1, 2011, the children have visited the two buildings (the C.J. Gillett Cigar Factory and Warehouse and the Joseph Moore House) as part of their tour of town. During their visit, photos were taken which are theirs to keep as a souvenir, and they had some refreshments while there. This year, for the first time, third graders from Granville joined the tour, led by Patricia Odiorne and Darlene Arthur. Docents included John Bannish, Mary Hadley, and Anne Viets during the three days of bus tours. Other stops were the boat launch area and fishing pier at the north end of Middle Congamond Lake and the Old Southwick Cemetery. We thank the Shurtleff Children’s Services for supporting this project each year, and the members of the society who have supported this project since its inception.
Thanks are also due to the members and leaders of Girl Scout Troop #11220 who helped with the second annual “Walk with Southwick Spirits” held recently at the Old Southwick Cemetery.
For the past three years, the children have been given an image of the C.J. Gillett Cigar Factory designed by artist and Southwick Historical Society member Sally Killips to be submitted for judging and prizes. This year’s winners are: First prize Nellie Zhuravel; Second Prize Adam Kaminski; Third prize Angelina Wynglarz.
