BOSTON – On Friday, Sen. Don Humason announced the unanimous approval of an environmental bond bill through the state senate that is promoting climate change adaptation, environmental and natural resource protection, and investment in recreational assets and opportunities.
“I am pleased that the Senate unanimously approved this important bond authorization,” said Humason in a press release. “This bill will provide essential resources to our local communities as they look to improve storm water management, maintain and improve parks and waterways, and make necessary repairs and enhancements to local bridges and bike paths.”
Locally, Southwick, Granville, and Tolland, each received money for projects.
In Southwick, their request is $1,000,000 for flooding control, dredging and eradication of non-native plant species of Canal Brook, an outlet of Congamond Lake. Several years ago, with the help of Rep. Nick Boldyga, Humason put this item in a proposed bond bill but it didn’t get funded.
Dredging the canal on Congamond Lake is of high importance and Humason wants to secure the money to purchase a dredger to enable the town to regularly dredge.
“That’s what the money would be for,” said Humason.
Other items include $100,000 for both the Granville and Tolland State Forests for maintenance and improvements. Humason believes that it would be vital to have these items accepted in order to support local forests.
“These smaller parks tend to not get the attention that the more urban parks or larger parks,” said Humason. “We wanted to make sure that there was money available for upgrades.”
