Southwick Library’s ‘Seed Library’ now open

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Public Library’s Suzanne Davis Seed Library was named after one of the library’s longtime trustees who recently passed. Davis was an avid flower gardener in addition to being a library supporter and a trustee since 2009.

Library Director Lynn Blair said patrons can visit the library, and get seeds in Davis’s honor, in person.

“Stop by the library anytime during open hours and the seed library is right next to the Library of Things in the repurposed card catalog,” Blair stated. “There are plenty of seeds to choose from, ranging from veggies to herbs and flowers.”

Patrons are encouraged to take a packet of seeds and instructions — no more than two per person, per visit – go home, plant, and watch them grow. “Our seed library will cover all types — veggies, herbs, and flowers- with the potential for more varieties added. We welcome all feedback and suggestions for this new venture,” said Blair.

The library is hosting gardening events throughout the spring to encourage patrons to take seeds and use the fruits — and veggies – of their labor.

On April 21 at 6:30 p.m., Cooking and Gardening with Herbs will be the first gardening virtual event. Chef and gardener Liz Barbour will take viewers on a slide presentation tour through her cottage-sized edible gardens and explore all the ways you can use herbs as part of an edible landscape. Following her presentation, she will create two healthy recipes using herb combinations that you can purchase and grow in your own garden. This program will be on Zoom. Blair said she and her staff are happy the library is open again.

“We have enjoyed being fully open,” said Blair. “Patrons have been very appreciative that they can drop by anytime without the need for an appointment. Staff have enjoyed seeing so many of our regular patrons again and are looking forward towards fun spring programs as well as our summer reading program.”

Blair said for now, library “events” are all online.

“At this time, our programs are still virtual, but we are planning to offer a few outdoor programs in May,” said Blair.

Current hours are Monday and Tuesday, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Wednesday, 1 p.m. – 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Saturday, 10 a.m. -1 p.m.
