Southwick Police remind community about holiday scams

SOUTHWICK – Being in the midst of the holiday season, shopping for your loved ones is quite the popular hobby. With the transformation of technology over the years, a lot of consumers tend to do some of their shopping online. Although it seems harmless, the Southwick Police Department wants to remind residents that there are dangers that come along with that option.

According to Southwick Police Sgt. Detective Robert Landis, he’s received reports of Southwick residents having packages that they bought online either missing or stolen off their porch or steps.

“People are going around looking for these deliveries and stealing them off of front porches,” said Landis. “The package stuff is really relevant this time of year.”

Landis insists the public that if they purchase an item online, to have a neighbor keep an eye out for it or schedule a certain time to have the package delivered.

Another report the department has received is about companies calling people and wanting them to be “packagers.” A packager consists of selling merchandise to people by repackaging the items and sending them to another address. Since the merchandise was bought through another persons credit card, it’s identity fraud and the victim is not making any additional money.

“In term, their just part of the scam themselves,” said Landis.

If anyone feels that they may be a victim to a scam this holiday season, contact the Southwick Police Department at 413-569-5348.
