State primary election results

WESTFIELD – 11.83%, or 2,854 of Westfield’s 24,116 registered voters cast their votes in yesterday’s state primary election. 2,316 of those voting were Democrats, which had the only ballot with contested elections. 526 of the city’s Republicans voted. 4 people voted on the Green-Rainbow party ballot, and 8 people voted on the United Independent ballot, neither of which had any candidates running for office.
In the contested Democratic races, Westfield voted for the eventual winners of those races, which included Mary E. Hurley for the Governor’s Council, who received 1179 votes to 994 for Jeffrey S. Morneau. The race also received 7 write-ins, with 136 blank ballots.
In the Hampden County Sheriff’s race, Nick Cocchi received 1240 votes, Thomas Ashe received 761, Michael J. Albano 239, John F. “Jack” Griffin 56, with 20 ballots left blank.
John Parker O’Grady, who will run against State Senator Don Humason in November, received 1479 votes, with 30 write-ins for the seat, and 807 ballots left blank.
In the uncontested Democratic races, Congressman Richard E. Neal received 1767 votes, with 24 write-ins, and 525 blank ballots. State Rep. John C. Velis received 1963 votes, with 7 write-ins, and 346 blanks.
Among Republicans, Humason received 507 votes, with 2 write-ins, and 17 left blank. John F. Comerford, the Republican candidate for Hampden County Sheriff who will run against Nick Cocchi in November, received 299 votes, with 89 write-ins, and 138 ballots left blank.
There were also 64 write-ins for a Republican candidate for Neal’s seat, 51 write-ins for a Republican candidate for Governor’s Council, and 51 write-ins for Velis’ seat, none of which will appear on the November ballot.
