WESTFIELD – A 49-year-old male resident of a second floor apartment at 260 Elm Street in Westfield was interviewed by city police after he reported that shots were fired in his residence during an alleged home invasion.
At 7:30 p.m. Friday, Westfield police responded to the call at the Elm Street address where the resident said that two persons – a balding male party in his 50s or 60s and a woman in her 20s – had invaded his home.
The resident said that he wrestled with the male invader, who was armed, and his weapon discharged before both invaders fled from his home.
Officer Michael Kane, one of the first officers to arrive, reports that the resident claimed that the gun fired three times and said he believes one round “hit the center mass of the suspect.”
Fourteen city officers and two State Police K-9 teams performed an extensive search for the suspects reported but no trace of them was found.
The dogs were able to determine that there was no foreign scent leaving the residence and the caller was transported to the station to make a statement.
Police report that they are unable to confirm the caller’s account of a a home invasion but two firearms,
a shotgun and hand gun, were removed from the residence by police.
The caller was transported from the police station to Noble Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
Police report that the investigation of the incident will continue.
