SPRINGFIELD, GREENFIELD and WESTFIELD – On Monday, volunteers from the Alliance to Develop Power (ADP) will load up a container truck with over 15,000 lbs. of turkey and take a road trip that will bring them to three western Massachusetts cities. By the end of the day, ADP will have distributed almost 1,000 turkeys to families across the region who experience continued food insecurity.
As is tradition, the annual distribution of turkeys will end in a community party at ADP’s offices at 130 Union Street in the South End of Springfield. The party serves as a symbol of the unity of the ADP community and acts as a way for their membership, spread across the region, to have a rare chance to meet and celebrate.
“At ADP we have a commitment to providing a turkey to each of our member families,” said Tim Fisk, ADP’s Executive Director. “We also are focused on making sure all of our members are moving toward year-round food security through our food pantries, farm share program and our soon-to-open Bodega in Holyoke. Having a big turkey on Thanksgiving is great. Having enough good healthy food every other day is the goal.”
The turkeys were purchased with a discount provided by COSTCO and will be delivered by ADP volunteers on Monday to residents of member communities in Greenfield, Westfield and Greater Springfield.
Over 250 ADP tenants, workers, faith leaders and immigrants, as well as local elected officials, are expected to join together for the party on Tuesday evening from 5-8 p.m., while dining on turkeys prepared from various ethnic traditions represented in the community. Entertainment will include music, singing, and dancing.
ADP’s Annual Thanksgiving Celebration is funded primarily with revenue generated by it’s housing and worker cooperatives. Support is also received from Project Bread and Fallon Community Health Plan.
The Alliance to Develop Power works to establish and promote cooperative economic development and civic engagement as a vehicle to provide low income people and people of color with basic necessities through institutions that they own and direct; to foster a sense of responsibility in a community focused on building power; and to serve as a mediating institution for the thousands of families whose poverty cuts them off from civic life.
