To the Editor: Hello Ward 3 and Westfield

Summer is over and while for many it almost election time.  There are a lot of popular myths that sound believable.  I am not out to change your minds, but to offer some facts for your decisions making responsibility.  First, let me give you an example: women are weak, frail, delicate, and not smart enough to make important decisions.  This one was around for 1,000’s of years.  Fact: How many men would like to go through a pregnancy?  Women have worked and have defended home and family alongside men for 10’s of 1,000’s of years.  Our West was filled with these examples.  They even elected women to governorships until territories became States.  History is filled with powerful queens who successfully ruled empires.  Myth debunked.

Other, modern pop myths: 1. Democrats are soft on defense, right?  Facts: Wilson, Dem., WWI; FDR, Dem. WWII, Truman, Dem., WWII, Cold War, and Korea; Kennedy, Dem., Cold War and Cuban Missile Crisis; Johnson, Dem., Viet Nam.  Clinton, Dem., Haiti and Bosnia.  Maybe with too many wars, they have experienced too many Americans dying, and too many trillions of tax dollars lost in war and recovery.  Other than Eisenhower not too many Republicans have done so well: Nixon, Rep., withdrew (retreated) from Viet Nam; Reagan armed and funded the Mujahedeen in Afghanistan to drive out the Soviets, without a post war plan where the Mujahedeen became the Taliban took over Afghanistan and terrorized Pakistan to this day.  The Gingrich, Rep., congress to tear down Clinton, dismissed his appeal to go after Bin Laden as a distraction and would not support his efforts to go after him.  Bush I, Rep., created no fly zone in Iraq where Al Qaida was protected by U.S. planes, and when so called Swamp Arabs (Shia) in the south were promised help but not given any, rebelled were slaughtered fueled distrust and hate of the U.S.  Then, Bush II, Rep., invasion of Iraq destabilized the Middle East vs. focus on Al Qaida and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Pop myth 2: Republicans are good for the economy, right?  Facts: Hoover, Rep, The Great Depression, with FDR, Dem., getting us out of it, and advanced our infrastructure for the 20th Cent.  I will give kudos to Eisenhower, Rep., for slowing down the post war economy to prevent a recession, and for additional infrastructural to enhance our business future.  JFK’s, Dem., space program etc. for setting us up for the Tech revolution, telecommunications industries, etc.  Reagan, Rep., started his admin. with a $800 billion debt, but promising that his tax cuts would make America so wealthy there would be no problem paying off any debts; left with a $2.+ Trillion dollar debt due to his off budget spending, and even with “revenue enhancements” (taxes in disguise).  And, left Bush II and his “No new taxes!” in a bind, and no re-election.  Clinton, Dem., reduced the size of government, had tax increases but eliminated deficit spending, with a pay as you go principle.  Bush II, the Great Recession.

Something to think about for your decision making in your voting.  Never fear, the Dems turn is next.

Your former Ward 3 Councilor, Brian Hoose
