Vandalism issues on Southwick Rail Trail

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Rail Trail has recently been dealing with some vandalism.

According to Park and Recreation Committee member Cara Cartello, there was vandalism on the trail near Mill Road, going towards Connecticut. Three of the benches have been vandalized, trash barrels, and writing on the concrete.

The Friends of the Southwick Rail Trail, who are the group in the community that take care of the trail, have already removed some of the benches and power washed them.

Dealing with this issue a number of times in the past, Cartello said that the Park and Rec committee and the Friends have been discussing ways to stop the vandalism, including installing cameras at different parts of the trail.

“There was talk about what we can do to prevent it,” said Cartello.

Christy Bannish, who is a member of the Friends group, said she saw some damage at the Kiosk on the North end of the trail. The trail stretches six miles from the border of Westfield on the north to the Connecticut line to the south and the trail members do their best to help keep the trail clean and safe.

“We basically are the eyes of the trail,” said Bannish.

If anyone sees any vandalism on the trail or any other inappropriate activity, contact the Southwick Friends of the Rail Trail at blank.
