Vegetarian nutrition expert to speak

AMHERST – Ultra-endurance athlete and leading expert in vegetarian nutrition Matt Ruscigno will present a free public lecture, “Plant-based and Powerful: Athletes and Vegan Diets” at 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 23 in 162 Campus Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
A vegan for 17 years, Ruscigno is the past chair of the Vegetarian Nutrition Dietetic Practice Group of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, co-author of “No Meat Athlete” and the best-selling vegan cookbook, “Appetite for Reduction.” His appearance is part of a series sponsored by the UMass Amherst department of nutrition, along with the UMass Students in Graduate Nutrition, UMass Nutrition Association and UMass Kinesiology Club.
Ruscigno is also co-creator and host of “Strongest Hearts,” a video documentary series about plant-based athletes. In his spare time, he runs ultra-marathons and takes part in iron triathlons, 200-plus mile cycling events and 24-hour bike races.
