WESTFIELD, MA – Mayor Brian P. Sullivan celebrated Arbor Day on Friday by taking part in a tree planting ceremony at City Hall.
Nate Sperry, Westfield Technical Academy’s Horticulture Technology Instructor and his horticulture students planted a 4-inch caliper Princeton Elm tree along the tree belt.
“Public shade trees play an important role in the health and quality of life we enjoy in Westfield,” Mayor Sullivan said. “As our mature trees age, it is incredibly important that we commit to planting young trees to ensure that future generations will enjoy the benefits, both tangible and intangible, that a healthy canopy can provide,” he continued.
This project was made possible by contributions from Tammy Tefft, the City’s Chief Procurement Officer, David Billips, Superintendent of Public Works, the Natural Resources Division, and Jay Vinskey, the City’s Principal Planner.
Westfield has been recognized for 10 years with the designation of Tree City USA.
