WESTFIELD – The City of Westfield on Monday afternoon issued updates to some construction projects.
Route 187 – Little River Road:
Ludlow Construction is scheduled to resume construction on March 27th, weather permitting. The work will resume with continuation of storm drain installation on Little River Road starting from where they installed drainage across the farmer’s field last year (across from House #251). The drainage work will generally proceed in three phases. The first phase is from the farmer’s field heading north towards Route 20 and also includes drainage on the lower section of Ridgecrest Drive. The second phase is from the farmer’s field heading south towards Pontoosic Road. The third phase of drainage installation will occur on Shaker Road from Little River Road to Laurel Avenue. The drainage work is expected to continue through most of the spring and will be followed by road reconstruction this summer. Further project updates will be provided as the work progresses.
MA Pike Bridges:
The scope of work is to remove the wearing surface and membrane; sound, chip, and patch the deck and backwall; replace the joint system; and replace the membrane and wearing surface of the Mass Turnpike Bridges.
Contractor MIG Corp. is currently removing snow from the work area and will then resume concrete sounding operations to determine the limits of the deteriorated backwall and deck concrete. Excavation of deteriorated concrete and recasting will begin for the backwall sections first and then the deck sections. The contractor is currently also doing work on other portions of this project while waiting for warmer night temperatures prior to the recasting of deck concrete.
The contract includes work on 8 bridges so the work at that location might finish sooner. However, because of the required stand-down period for the Air Show, phase 3 of 3 will not start until after the show so work will at least go through the fall for the Route 202 Bridge.
The current scheduled contract completion date is in the spring of 2018. The recent lane closures were for pot hole repair and temporary pavement markings. Most work will be behind barriers for each of the 3 phases, however, temporary closures of the open lanes will be required to off-load excavated materials and to receive new materials (such as reinforcing bar and concrete). These lane closures will be intermittent and will continue through the construction season, however, passage through the work area will always be provided via one-way alternating directions of traffic.
