WESTFIELD–The Westfield Fire Department staff could be back to full size soon, after the Westfield Fire Commission appointed two paramedics to the city’s fire department this week.
The commission appointed Zachary Kareta, of Westfield, and Matthew Potter, of Monson, to be firefighters for the city Wednesday night, following a special meeting to interview candidates. Both men are certified paramedics and are expected to work on both fire apparatuses and on the ambulance. They were chosen from five candidates that were interviewed. The two will bring the department back to its full complement of personnel.

“The two candidates are experienced paramedics, so we hope they can hit the ground running and we can teach them the fire side,” Westfield Fire Chief Mary Regan said. “I think the commission did a great job picking the best two candidates.”
The two were offered conditional employment with the city, but before they are officially OKed for their respective positions they still must pass some obstacles. These obstacles include passing the Massachusetts Firefighter Physical Abilities Test (PAT), a medical screening and attend and complete Massachusetts Fire Academy within a year of employment.
The PAT includes a simulated stair climb, navigation through dark, tight spaces, forcible entry and other firefighter-related activities. For the Massachusetts Fire Academy, recruits attend a 10-week program that teaches them the many intricacies of fire science, hazardous materials and other applicable skills and knowledge.
