WESTFIELD—The Westfield Fire Commission made the hiring of a paramedic-firefighter official Monday night, but the weather from last week delayed the full ceremony.
The Fire Commission appointed Kyle Morrissey to the department Monday evening as a firefighter-paramedic during last night’s commission meeting. Morrissey was previously extended a conditional offer of employment, as long as he passed several screenings and test. Morrissey was previously offered a conditional offer of employment in December last year.
Morrissey was not given the oath of the position however, which is usually provided by the City Clerk, due to the City Council meeting scheduled the same evening and the City Clerk’s presence there, according to Fire Commissioner Albert Masciadrelli. That meeting, which is normally scheduled on the first and third Thursday of every month, was rescheduled to Monday following Winter Storm Grayson’s impact on the city last week.
The oath of office was instead expected to take place sometime Tuesday morning.
Morrissey, a paramedic, had previously worked as a call firefighter-EMT with Russell Fire Department since 2011, and also spent three months prior to the conditional offer of employment in December as a paramedic in Springfield. He also received his bachelors in paramedicine from the University of New Haven.
Morrissey previously had to pass a medical screening, hearing test, psychological screening and the Massachusetts Physical Abilities Test in order to be hired on the department. He now has to complete the Massachusetts Fire Academy within a year of his appointment, unless scheduling conflicts arise within the academy.
