WESTFIELD-More than 70 volunteers converged on the Westfield River on Saturday morning as part of the annual Source-to-Sea Clean Up, according to Bill Rose, president of the Westfield River Watershed Association.
“Our event is conducted in conjunction with the Connecticut River Watershed Council’s annual clean up along the Connecticut River,” said Rose.
Volunteers met at 9 a.m. at designated points including the Westfield Gas & Electric substation and at Pynchon Point in Agawam. Mark Damon was coordinating the logistics for the Greater Westfield sites along the river and its tributaries.
“The weather was perfect and the turn out of people was impressive,” said Rose.
For the record, Rose noted that 92 trash bags were filled with debris as well as 20 clear bags of recycled materials. Also, teams recovered 31 tires, two lawn chairs, one large wooden cabinet, four car fenders, one bike frame, one bathroom sink, one plastic 55-gallon drum, and 28 metal items.
“The estimated weight from the clean up is more than 500 pounds,” said Rose, noting that 100 pounds was from Pynchon Point.
Participants included the Southwick High School’s conservation club, Agawam High School’s AP Club and National Honor Society, and Agawam Boy Scout Troop #185.
“We had a very successful day on Saturday,” said Rose. “This was an awesome day for the clean up.”
