Graduation ceremony at Whalley Park discussed

SOUTHWICK – The Southwick Parks and Recreation Commission hopes Whalley Park will officially open by the start of summer.
“We’re probably going to have a soft opening,” said Commission Chairman Kelly Magni.
Commissioner Patrick Roche said last night that there are still a few finishing touches to get the fields ready to use, including installing foul poles on the baseball and softball fields and benches in the dugouts and the soccer fields.
The Commission also agreed to follow the recommendations of Safety Officer Kirk Sanders and remove the stop signs in the park and install two signs indicating a crosswalk in the park, add a Keep Right sign, and install a 15 mph speed limit sign.
The park gate was removed recently by the contractor and Magni said it would not be replaced,
“Technically it’s still not open,” Magni said.
Commissioners discussed hosting the Southwick-Tolland-Granville High School graduation at the park Tuesday and said they would welcome the ceremony at the park.
“The Park and Recreation would love to have the 2015 graduation at Whalley Park,” said Commissioner Susan Grabowski. “What a great way to open the park.”
Roche, Magni and Commissioner Jeanner Reed Waldron said they would be happy to host the graduation outdoors at Whalley Park. Currently, the ceremony is set to take place inside the high school auditorium.
