WESTFIELD – If the Westfield High School girls’ basketball team makes another push for the playoffs, and a league title this season, the Bombers will likely look back on this moment.
Westfield picked up a signature victory, defeating one of the region’s top ranked teams, Belchertown, 48-43, inside the Bombers’ gymnasium Friday night.
Alexa Morin (17 points, 14 rebounds) delivered a stellar efforts for Westfield, recording a double-double. Bombers’ Karly Mastello posted six points and hauled down 14 rebounds, and Alicia Arnold finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
“It’s all about changing the culture and believing that we can we tough games,” Westfield coach Ralph Loos said. “I told these girls in the locker room after the game, ‘Think about what you just did.’”
Westfield limited one of the league’s top scorers, Belchertown’s Tea Spellacy, to just 12 points. The Bombers (4-5), who had been averaging close to 25 turnovers a game, committed just 12 against Belchertown.
Said coach Loos: “This was a big win.”
Rams stumble on road
Holyoke Catholic 45, Southwick 35
HOLYOKE – It was a rough outing for the Southwick High School girls’ basketball team on the rugged streets of Holyoke Friday night.
Holyoke Catholic gutted out a 45-35 win over Southwick at the Holyoke Boys’ & Girls’ Club. Ashley Shea and McKinley White scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Rams.
Southwick and Holyoke Catholic were embroiled in a gritty contest through three quarters. The Gaels surged ahead over the final eight minutes.
“It was a tight game, but we kind of let it get away from us in the fourth quarter,” Southwick assistant coach Rick Harriman said. “We had a few breakdowns on defense (late) and did not score when we had to play catch-up.”
Southwick will look to bounce back against visiting McCann Tech Monday at 7 p.m.
Saints cage Tigers
St. Mary’s 41, Westfield Voc-Tech 23
St. Mary’s put forth a balanced attack to defeat neighborly rival Westfield Voc-Tech Friday night.
Alissa Easton scored nine points to lead the Saints. Karissa Foley had eight.
Voc-Tech’s Katie Nesmelova led all scorers with 13. The Tigers scored 14 of their 21 points in the second half.

Sullivans lead Bombers
Westfield 7, West Springfield 1
Connor Sullivan and Chris Sullivan scored two goals apiece to lead Westfield on the road at the Olympia Friday night.
Sam Evans, Liam Whitman, and Colin Burns also scored for the Bombers, who took command of the game with a four-goal second period.
