William A. Mullen

MANCHESTER, NH – William “Bill” A. Mullen, 58, of Manchester, NH, died September 11, 2012, in the loving care of his sister and brother. He was born on November 6, 1953 in Westfield, MA, the son of Barbara Bargeron Mullen and Frederick Mullen.
He was raised in Westfield and graduated from Westfield High School in 1972. Bill later relocated to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire where he lived for a few years before moving to Manchester. He graduated from New Hampshire Technical Institute with an associate degree in early childhood education and from Notre Dame College with a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education. Bill was an educator in the Manchester School District for seventeen years. He taught fourth and fifth grades at Beech Street School for many years and more recently fifth grade at McDonough School. Throughout his career he coached basketball and umpired baseball for a number of youth and adult leagues.
While Bill was proud of his many accomplishments he was never one to boast. His family however, recognized that he was a man of many talents and interests. He loved music and attended countless concerts, especially The Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. He was a coin collector and a master chess player, and for several years monitored the chess club at Beech Street School. He was an excellent teacher and a true math genius.
Probably his greatest love was sports – any sport. He was a loyal Yankees and Patriots fan and had the good fortune to attend the Subway Series and four Super Bowl Championships. He also enjoyed his annual pilgrimage to the Indy 500. Not only was he a sports enthusiast, he was also a walking encyclopedia of knowledge regarding all sports. There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that he missed his calling as a sports historian or journalist. Bill was a loving brother, a proud uncle and Papa, a loyal friend and a respected teacher. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew and loved him.
Bill’s mother and father died before him. He leaves his sister, Patricia Titus and husband, Kirk, of Wolfeboro, NH; his brother, Richard Mullen of Tuftonboro, NH; his sister-in-law, Teresa Mahoney Mullen; his former wife and best friend, Betty Mullen of Manchester, NH; step-son, Jamie Cox and wife, Kelley, of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; grandsons, Liam and Noah; his nieces, Jessica Titus and husband, Dan Van Dorn, Sarah Titus-Smith and husband, Karl, Emily Titus, Sheila Mullen Prindle and husband, Julian, his nephews, Jamie Mullen and wife, Erica, and Ian Mullen and wife, Lisa Fox; several great-nieces and nephews, Sam, Grace, Jack, Brynn, Emmy, Taylor, John, Eamonn, Seamus and many friends.
