WESTFIELD – Nine different Westfield State players scored goals as the Owls posted a 19-9 victory over Smith College in a non-conference women’s lacrosse game at Alumni Field on Wednesday night.
Junior Meg Griffin (Granby/Granby, Conn.) scored three goals and handed out four assists to lead the way, with Caroline Smart (Weymouth/Weymouth, Mass.) adding three goals and an assist, while freshman Brooke Williams (Minnechaug/Wilbraham, Mass.) scored twice and had three assists for Westfield State. The Owls shared the ball well, finishing with 13 assists on their 19 goals.
Westfield grabbed a 6-1 lead in the first 15 minutes of the game and never looked back.
Smith was led by three goals and two assists from Jessica Lillquist (East Lyme/East Lyme, Conn.), while Julia Hamilton (Deerfield Academy/Williamstown, Mass.) added three goals. Sarah Price (Hudson/Hudson, Ohio) stopped 14 shots in goal for the Pioneers.
Westfield State out-shot Smith 41-24, and held a 33-18 edge in shots on goal. Westfield also had a 29-15 edge in ground balls.
The Owls have won four straight games to improve to 4-4. Smith falls to 3-7 on the season.
