WESTFIELD – Maeve Wilber has been selected to attend the 2013 YMCA Swimming Leadership Development Camp in Orlando, FL from Oct. 24-27. Maeve has been a member of the Westfield YMCA Wave swim team since 2007. The high school junior from Great Barrington, MA is a Wave team record holder in multiple individual and relay events. Additionally, she has qualified for and competed at YMCA National Swimming Championships during the summers of 2012 and 2013.
Maeve is one of 20 Y athletes (10 women and 10 men) selected from YMCA’s around the country. She had to submit an application along with a peer reference and a coach recommendation, along with her swimming achievements, to be considered for selection for the camp. Part of the selection process was determined by academic strength, community service and the demonstrated potential to be a team leader.
The goal of the camp is to develop team leaders for YMCA swimming programs around the country while introducing athletes to their peers and other coaches. Camp included sessions on leadership & mentoring, communication skills, the college selection process, team building and goal setting. Athletes also will participate in pool training sessions during their time in Orlando. Upon their return, the athletes will be better prepared as team leaders and ready to educate their teammates and be more engaged as team mentors.
